Indian films have a history of taking inspiration from the west and other world cinemas, but the tables are slowly turning. This time it is the 'Perfectionist' Aamir Khan who is proving an inspiration to filmmakers overseas. Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 blockbuster, 3 Idiots, has found favour in Mexico with the film now being remade into Spanish. The Mexican filmmaker, Carlos Bolado, has even named his film '3 Idiotas'. The film is an official remake of Hirani’s 3 Idiots.
The film is slated to release on 2 June this year, and its trailer is already making waves on the internet. For Indian fans, the trailer will have a touch of dejavu.
Alfonso Dosal plays the lead role Pancho, a twist on Aamir Khan’s character 'Rancho'. It is clear why Dosal was chosen to play the lead. The actor shares some characteristic features with Aamir Khan. Stepping into Sharman Joshi and R.Madhavan’s shoes are actors Christian Vasquez and German Valdes III. The role of the dictatorial professor, Dr Viru Sahastrabuddhe, will be played by actor Rodrigo Murray. His character is named Professor Escalona. Actress Martha Higareda steps into the shoes of Kareena Kapoor. Another standout scene in the trailer is that of a gentleman farting in class. It is safe to presume that this gentleman might be the Mexican version of Chatur Ramalingam, a role made famous by Omi Vaidya.
It is not just the story though. The film even has a version of the 'All Izz Well' song that proved to be such a hit.
As the official remake of 3 Idiots, it is natural that Bolado has given story credit to Rajkumar Hirani. However, there is no mention of Chetan Bhagat, whose book 'Five point Someone' inspired the film in the first place.
Apart from the Mexican version, Hirani's film has also derived interest from Hollywood, China, and even Italy. 3 Idiots producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra had also suggested that the star of Hong Kong films Stephen Chow, known for cult comedy films such as Shaolin Soccer (2001) and Kung Fu Hustle (2004), is also looking to produce a Chinese remake of Hirani's film.
3 Idiots was a light-hearted satire on the rigorous education system prevalent in engineering colleges. You really don't need to know Spanish to watch the trailer. The visuals speak for themselves.
