Plagiarism complaint against Rajinikanth's Kaala Karikaalan

It has been just two days since the shooting began in Mumbai and Rajinikanth's Kaala Karikaalan has run into trouble already.

An assistant director and filmmaker, Rajashekhar, has alleged that he owns the copyrights to the story and title of Pa Ranjith's film. He has filed a case against producer Dhanush, and the director, accusing them of plagiarising his story for Rajinikanth's film.

In his complaint to the Chennai City Commissioner of Police, Rajashekhar, alleged that team of Kaala Karikaalan have used his core plot and rehashed it.

Rajashekar also claims to have narrated the story to several people, including Rajini's fan club president, Sathyanarayana. It was through Sathyanarayana that Rajashekhar managed to meet Rajinikanth at his residence and narrate the story in 1996. Reportedly, the superstar took pictures with the filmmaker and promised to discuss the story later.

The filmmaker also claimed that he had announced the launch of the film in 1996. He suggested that at the audio launch function that was held in 1996, the titles of 'Karikaalan' and 'Udanpiravaa Thangachi' were released.

In his complaint, the filmmaker urged the police to take necessary action against the makers of the film.

While Rajashekhar's story is reportedly based on a period epic, Pa Ranjith's film has Rajinikanth playing a gangster who looks out for the struggling Tamils in Mumbai's Dharavi slums.

As of now, there has been no response from the makers of Rajinikanth's film.

Kaala Karikaalan stars Rajinikanth, Huma Qureshi, Nana Patekar among others, and is expected to be ready for release in January 2018.
