Last year, there were reports about a sequel to Boney Kapoor’s Mr India (1987), but there was no update on it later. Now, Kapoor has confirmed that he will be making a sequel to the much-loved sci-fi film.
Kapoor spoke exclusively with Cinestaan.com on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the film's release. "Yes, I will definitely make it," he said. "That is very much there. It [the concept] is there in my mind."
Though the concept is in Kapoor's mind, he is yet to put it down on paper. So, naturally, no details are available, nor has the cast been decided. "All that I will open up once I am ready with it," he said.
Directed by Shekhar Kapur, Mr India starred Boney Kapoor's younger brother Anil, Sridevi (who later became Boney's wife), Amrish Puri, Satish Kaushik and Annu Kapoor in pivotal roles. It also starred a number of kids including Aftab Shivdasani, who went on to become an actor, and Ahmed Khan, who is now a choreographer and filmmaker.
Mr India revolved around a formula which could make one invisible. Anil Kapoor’s character becomes invisible and teaches the evil Mogambo (Puri) and his gang a lesson.
The film is still remembered by fans 30 years on. "When the viewers can’t get over it, how can the makers get over it?" said the happy Boney Kapoor. "It is a special film and will remain that way. It’s very close to my heart. I remember each and every working process. I had a fantastic, happy team where everybody put in their best. Everybody was absolutely emotional about every aspect of the film."
