Raabta plagiarism row: Kriti Sanon, Sushant Singh Rajput step in to defend film

Raabta will have to clear a legal hurdle before it can hit the screens. Dinesh Vijan’s directorial debut has run into a plagiarism row with producers of Telugu film Magadheera (2009) accusing Vijan of plagiarism.

Magadheera was directed by Baahubali director SS Rajamouli. Vijan and producers T-Series issued a statement rubbishing Magadheera producer Allu Arvind’s claim. Now Raabta lead pair Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon, too, have defended their film.

Apparently, the usually sagacious Rajput toed the archetypal ‘8-stories’ line, before Sanon nudged him and cut him short.

"If you read any book on screenplay, the most basic book, the first chapter of that book tells you that there are only eight different stories that you can tell, so every story is from those stories. It's as simple as that,” Rajput told journalists while attending the premiere of Sachin A Billion Dream on Wednesday (24 May).

Now, while we agree with Rajput, this reason was not the most convincing. Sensing that, Sanon nudged Rajput and offered her own line of defence.

"I want to say that I have seen the film that you are talking about (Maghadheera) and I have read the Raabta script. I know the film inside out and it is in no way similar. The characters, the narrative...everything from scratch is different,” said Sanon.

Rajput added, “Whoever you are talking about, whoever has a problem or sees a similarity can watch our film and they will get to know!”

The makers of Magadheera have moved a city civil court in Hyderabad seeking a stay on the release of Raabta. The court will view the film before giving its verdict on 1 June.
