The success of Aamir Khan’s films in China has opened the doors for other Indian filmmakers to showcase their films in the neighbouring country. Khan’s 2016 film Dangal, which was released in China earlier this month, has so far crossed a staggering $100 million (Rs646 crore at the current exchange rates) — the highest for an Indian film in China. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion makers will hope for similar returns when they release their film in July.
“With Baahubali 2: The Conclusion we are now at $220 million worldwide, without China. Our target now is for China to give us the biggest lifetime score of all time for an Indian movie,” Francois da Silva, who presides over international sales for Arka Mediaworks (Baahubali producers), told Variety magazine.
Director SS Rajamouli had screened the first part, Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) in over 5,000 screens in China. The film grossed $7 million in China. Producers will hope to get a wider release for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion this time.
Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has already smashed Indian records garnering over Rs1,500 crore worldwide. The Hindi version alone has bagged a record Rs478.3 crore at the domestic box office.
Before Dangal, Khan had screened Pk (2014) and 3 Idiots (2009) in China. Pk was the first Indian film to cross 100 million Yuan in China.
