Film industry, PM Narendra Modi mourn death of 'mother' Reema Lagoo on Twitter


The shocking news of the veteran actress's death resonated on Twitter with fans ranging from Prime minister Modi to Priyanka Chopra expressing their condolences.

Veteran actress Reema Lagoo passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest in Mumbai today. The actress was 59.

A winner of four Filmfare awards, Lagoo made an impact on Hindi cinema as the sweet, caring mother in films like Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! (1994), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) among others.

It was natural that the film industry came together to express their condolences on Twitter.

It was Rishi Kapoor who first put out an emotional tweet upon hearing the news. The actor who acted opposite Lagoo in one of her earliest films Hamara Khandaan (1988), wrote:

Amitabh Bachchan expressed regret about the fairly 'young' age of Lagoo, and the shocking news of her death.

Abhishek Bachchan too expressed his condolences at the passing of the graceful actress.

Akshay Kumar, who acted with Lagoo in films like Yeh Dillagi (1994), Jai Kishen (1994), Aarzoo (1999) and Hatya: The Murder (2004), called her a 'fine actress and person'.

Karan Johar, who famously cast Lagoo as Shah Rukh Khan's mother in his first film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), called her a 'warm, gracious and exceptional actor'.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined fans in paying tribute to one of the most loved on-screen mothers in Indian cinema.

The Prime Minister was joined by minister of information and broadcasting, Venkaiah Naidu, who put up a collage of Lagoo's scenes with Salman Khan as tribute.

Even Priyanka Chopra took time off from her Baywatch promotions to focus on the loss back home.

Director Mahesh Bhatt reminisced about a lost opportunity to meet the actress recently in his tweet.

Director Madhur Bhandarkar and actor Boman Irani, too, paid their respects. 

Even actor Paresh Rawal, too, put up a rare tweet to mourn the loss of the actress.

Even the younger generation of Arjun Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh joined in paying homage to the veteran actress.

Lagoo's funeral will be held at 2 pm at Oshiwara Crematorium in Mumbai today.
