Even as the season two finale of Priyanka Chopra's TV show Quantico is all set to air in India tonight (it already aired in the US on Monday), the fans of show and the star have something to celebrate.

Quantico has been renewed by ABC for a third season, albeit for 13 episodes. While the earlier two seasons of the drama had 22 episodes, a shorter and tighter season three could work in favour of the show. With the popular singing competition series American Idol set for midseason revival, ABC has little remaining shelf space, which could help explain Quantico's short order.

Another major change comes in terms of the creative leadership. Creator and executive producer Josh Safran has stepped down as the showrunner,  though he will stay on as a consultant on season three. The hunt for a new showrunner is currently on.

Quantico was the only series from ABC whose fate remained unresolved heading into this week’s upfront presentation in New York on 16 May. Number of creative changes, negotiations to trim the license fee and discussions to move production from New York to Los Angeles (nothing has been announced on that front yet) are said to be the prime reasons for the delayed announcement.

Season two of the series moved in January from Sundays to Mondays following The Bachelor after the freshman drama Conviction fizzled. Its new slot didn't help matters much, as the ABC Studios drama registered an average rating of 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demo over 21 episodes, according to Nielsen live-plus-same day numbers, down 45% from season 1. The seven days of DVR fared better though with an average of 5 million total viewers and a 1.5 in the demo.

Even then Chopra's presence made a huge case in favour of the renewel say reports. "Still, the series has a global star, Chopra, as its lead, and has been a strong international seller for ABC Studios, which helped for the renewal," writes the Hollywood trade website Deadline.com.

Chopra plays the lead role of American hero Alex Parrish on the show, which also stars Johanna Braddy, Yasmine Al Massri, Jake McLaughlin and Blair Underwood, and revolves around the role of FBI and CIA in terrorism and politics.

The actress took to Twitter to thank everyone for making season three happen.

The date and time for the premiere of Quantico season three and other details are expected to be announced at the ABC upfront bazaar on 16 May.

As the finale airs tonight, a video of Chopra raising a really emotional toast to the cast and crew of the show came out. The actress was seen wiping her tears as she spoke at the wrap up party of Quantico.

Meanwhile, Chopra has been busy promoting her upcoming Hollywood film, Baywatch, which hits American theatres on 25 May and is due to be released in India on 2 June. The actress is also in talks to join Jim Parson-starrer A Kid Like Jake, to be filmed in New York this summer.
