Vidya Balan hasn’t had a commercially successful film since Kahaani (2012). The sequel to Kahaani, which was released last year, also did not light up the box office. Now, all eyes are on her much-talked-about upcoming film, Begum Jaan.
The first poster of the film has just been released and it certainly piques curiosity about the film. It features Vidya giving a piercing look as she plays the madam (head) of a brothel. Her pose and intense look clearly say 'I mean business'.
The legend, My Body. My House. My Country. My Rules, which appear on the poster, speak volumes of the film's bold theme. Vidya shared the poster on Twitter along with the caption, “Aa rahi hoon main! #BegumJaanFirstLook @visheshfilms @srijitspeaketh.” The caption instantly brings back memories of Shah Rukh Khan’s famous dialogue from Raees, which was also used in the trailers — “Aa raha hoon.”
Begum Jaan is an official remake of Srijit Mukherji’s acclaimed Bengali film, Rajkahini (2015). The original had Rituparna Sengupta playing the central character of the head of a brothel. The Hindi version, too, is helmed by Mukherji.
The film is based in 1947 and focuses on the partition of Bengal into West Bengal and East Pakistan (which later became Bangladesh). It also stars Ila Arun, Gauhar Khan, Pallavi Sharda (of Besharam fame), Flora Saini, Pitobash Tripathy, Ashish Vidyarthi, Chunky Pandey, Rajit Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Vivek Mushran and Rajesh Sharma.
Produced by Mahesh Bhatt’s Vishesh Films, Begum Jaan is set to be released on 14 April 2017.
