Abu Azmi, the Maharashtra head of Samajwadi Party, has lashed out at filmmaker Karan Johar for becoming a single father through surrogacy. The Ae Dil Hai Mushkil director was recently blessed with twins, who he named Roohi and Yash.

Speaking to the media today, he said, “It is not a crime to get married, is it? Even a man can marry a man. God has made equal number of males and females. But He hasn’t made a partner for him (Johar).”

When it was pointed out to him that Johar had become a father within the parameters of a legal act, Azmi showed disregard for the law. He said, “Arre don’t tell me about such act fact. I don’t know whether he has done it within the parameters. But one should get married. If you can’t get married due to some disease, tell about it. Maybe his condition is such that he can’t get married (sic).”

His comments were met with loud laughter by the media present. But he added, “Look, I am not making fun of him. He is so grown up. If he still can’t marry due to any problem, he should adopt. What is the need for antics like surrogacy?”

Azmi, who is the father-in-law of actress Ayesha Takia, has had a long history of making eyebrow-raising sexist remarks. He was in the news during the aftermath of the Bangalore molestation incident during New Year’s time. He had said that women are equally responsible for crimes like rapes and molestation.
