The trailer to Raveena Tandon's comeback film, Maatr, is out. From the looks of the trailer, the film is set to be a dark, revenge drama that might prick some sensitive issues for the audience. Directed by Ashtar Syed, the trailer delivers a sharp statement against the systemic flaws that let rapists dawdle with the system, while rape victims and their families suffer.
Tandon plays mother to a young girl, Tia, who is brutally raped. While she decides to take the fight to the system to bring down the criminals, the system itself delays the process of justice. With no other option in front of her, she finally takes the matter in her own hands.
Tandon brings the requisite intensity to the trailer with her performance as the mother. Tautly edited, the trailer has its moments and manages to induce some goosebumps. Anurag Arora, as the inspector dealing with a murderous mother and the system, makes an impression.
The sight of the young girl struggling might bring back stark memories of the Nirbhaya rape incident from 2012, which is the issue the film targets. The trailer also brings up the issue by calling Delhi 'the rape capital'. The makers of the film seek to induce action from a reactive audience. However, it does seem to go overboard with the 'call to action' credit at the end of the trailer.
Written by Michael Pellico, Maatr also stars Alisha Khan, Madhur Mittal, Divya Jagdale, Anurag Arora among others. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on 21 April.
