Kirti Kulhari will be playing a poetess who stammers in her next, Madhur Bhandarkar’s Indu Sarkar.

Indu Sarkar is a film based on the Emergency that was declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi between 1975 and 1977. Kulhari is playing a poetess who rebels against the system. The actress was a revelation in Shoojit Sircar-produced Pink last year.

As part of her preparation, the actress is said to be learning how to stammer.

"Vulnerable in the beginning, my character goes through immense pain and suffering through her journey and eventually finds her true self. I took classes for voice modulation to make the stammering sound convincing," Kulhari told The Times Of India newspaper.

The actress also underlined the challenges associated with playing such a role.

"Shooting these kind of scenes is always depressing and exhausting, yet liberating as you explore the pain inside you, face it and use it to express what the character is going through,” added Kulhari.

Directed by Bhandar, Indu Sarkar also stars Neil Nitin Mukesh who plays Sanjay Gandhi.
