Prostitutes they may be, but Begum Jaan and friends have hearts that beat for their beloved. The makers of Begum Jaan unveiled the first track, 'Prem Mein Tohre', a soft romantic number built on a contemporary yet classical tune, today. The song belongs to Vidya Balan's Begum Jaan, who bares her heart through its soulful lyrics.

At a time when most music directors are rehashing classics, Anu Malik springs a pleasant surprise with this soothing number. The contemporary nature of the tune may seem a bit out of sync for a period drama, but the purity of the music melts your heart.

The best ballads are often those that define love in the simplest words. Kausar Munir hasn’t penned a classic track, but 'Prem Mein Tohre' is a ballad that will soothe parched hearts. What elevates the song is the soulful voice of the legend, Asha Bhosle. The singer raises the song to a different plane.

The visuals also see the return of 1990s actor Vivek Mushran. Mushran plays Master, to whom Begum Jaan loses her heart. Vidya embodies to the T the spirit of a woman in search of love. It’s not just Begum Jaan; the other women of the house add to the lovelorn element of the song, too. The colourful celebrations by the courtesans only add to the visual element of the track.

'Prem Mein Tohre' may not appeal to the masses at large, but it strikes the right chord with lovelorn hearts.
