Con movies are far and few in Hindi cinema. The one to make a great impact in the recent years was Neeraj Pandey’s Special 26 (2013), that was inspired by true events. Farhan Akhtar and Annu Kapoor will hope for a similar impact with their upcoming film The Fakir of Venice.
The makers unveiled the first poster of the film, which has Kapoor and Akhtar dressed as fakirs (religious ascetic who lives solely on alms). While Annu Kapoor has donned the traditional fakir avatar, Akhtar is a fakir who wears jeans with a saffron kurta.
The tagline of the film ‘watch the con unfold from Mumbai to Venice’ is self-explanatory. The film is directed by unheralded filmmaker Anand Surapur, who will make his first full feature length film. Surapur has to his credit a short film Noorie (2002).
The film is largely set in Venice. Apart from Akhtar and Kapoor, it also stars Kamal Sidhu and host of unheralded Italian actors.
It must be recalled that The Fakir of Venice was made in 2008 and was screened at the annual Indian film festival at Los Angeles. Nine years is a long time indeed. The film was supposed to be Farhan's acting debut.
The release date is yet to be announced. But Akhtar fans will hope that the long wait ends this year.
