Box office: Varun-Alia's Badrinath Ki Dulhania ends first week with a solid Rs72.25 crore

The Alia Bhatt-Varun Dhawan starrer notched up good business on its first week, with Rs 72.25 crores, and looks likely to continue its good form through the next week.

Shashank Khaitan's Badrinath Ki Dulhania ended its first week with Rs72.25 crore, falling just short of the Akshay Kumar courtroom drama, Jolly LLB 2 (2017). The first week collections of Badrinath Ki Dulhania also better Varun Dhawan's best first week collections of ABCD 2 (2015). For Alia Bhatt, the performance of the film only adds further proof to her rise as a box office star.

Shashank Khaitan's film comfortably beat out its predecessor, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya's (2015) first week collections by more than Rs20 crores. While the lull of Holi saw the collections dip a little, the film managed to keep a steady inflow through the rest of the week. The film has already been declared a hit by trade analysts, and with no big releases in the coming weeks it looks likely to chase down the Rs100 crore mark, last achieved by Jolly LLB 2, which was released on 25 January this year.

The box office breakdown of Badrinath Ki Dulhania first week is as follows.

Friday: Rs 12 crore

Saturday: Rs 14.25 crore

Sunday: Rs 15.75 crore

Monday: Rs 12 crore

Tuesday: Rs 7.50 crore

Wednesday: Rs 5.75 crore

Thursday : Rs 5 crore

Total: Rs 72.25 crore

With Trapped, Machine, and Aa Gaya Hero being the only competition this week, Badrinath Ki Dulhania is likely to see its purple patch extended. The release of Phillauri next week is the only thing that could affect Khaitan's film, but it probably won't make a huge dent in the collections. The next couple of weeks might see the film become on of the big successes at the box office this year.
