Kamal Haasan blames Jayalalithaa for banning Vishwaroopam

In a recent interview, actor and director Kamal Haasan has indirectly named the late chief minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa, for banning his ambitious project, Vishwaroopam (2013). The film had irked several Muslim organisations, which felt that some scenes allegedly hurt their sentiments. 

Speaking to Tamil news channel, Haasan claimed that the ban on the film was a revenge action by the TN government. He said, “Nearly four years ago, my company Raaj Kamal Films had filed a case against Tamil Nadu government and had won. Nevertheless, the ban on Vishwaroopam cost us Rs55 crore and some Muslim outfits alone can’t be held accountable because my brothers from the same community had also helped me.”

He added, “One person who was responsible for the ban was in power.” As Jayalalithaa was the chief minister of the state, it seems the veteran artist took a dig at her. She had justified the ban citing that the law and order situation would have got affected. 

Vishwaroopam had released worldwide on 25 January 2013. But the film could release in Tamil Nadu only on 7 February 2013 after Haasan had a mutual agreement with Muslim religious groups and agreed to mute a few scenes. 

There is a lot of anticipation for the second part of Vishwaroopam. Last month, Haasan revealed on Twitter that it will take another six months for the post-production to be completed.
