Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt's magic has worked once again. Shashank Khaitan's Badrinath Ki Dulhania managed a good first day total with Rs 12crore nett collections. It is the second highest opening day collections for Varun Dhawan after ABCD 2 (2015). The film also matched the first day collections of Jolly LLB 2. The Akshay Kumar-starrer had earned Rs12.06 crore on its first day.
Badrinath Ki Dulhania review: A romcom with feminist protagonists to root for
Badrinath Ki Dulhania managed to surge past the Hollywood blockbuster Kong: Skull Island, which only managed to earn Rs3 crore nett. The advantage for Badrinath Ki Dulhania lies in its setting in Uttar Pradesh, ensuring the film a good collection in the northern territories. Unlike ABCD 2, a dance flick targeted at an urban audience, Khaitan's film has a more overarching theme that is appealing to a larger demographic. The only flaw for the film is that its early release in March has robbed it of an additional bonus that might have come its way if it was a summer release.
The only other competition for the film, Commando 2, ended its eighth day at the box office with a dismal Rs30 lakh nett. The film has not even crossed Rs25 crore in its lifetime earnings.
The low competition and long weekend are likely to ensure a surge in the collections of Badrinath Ki Dulhania.
