The first poster of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Indu Sarkar is out. It makes you curious about this political drama which is produced by Bharat Shah and Bhandarkar himself.
The film is set in the time of the Emergency imposed by prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. Actress Supriya Vinod will be playing Gandhi. However, this poster doesn’t feature her. It has Kirti Kulhari, Anupam Kher and Tota Roy Chowdhury.
Kulhari plays the lead character in the film, a stammering poet who gains confidence and rebels against the system. Her last film was the acclaimed Pink (2016), which was released last year. She had received rave reviews for her performance.
The poster shows Parliament House in the background and a group of police officers in the foreground trying to control a riot-like situation. The inclusion of the images of news articles related to the Emergency adds to the appeal.
The film also stars Neil Nitin Mukesh as Sanjay Gandhi. A still released from the film earlier this year showed him closely resembling the late politician.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Supriya Vinod will be playing Indira Gandhi. She has been doing that successfully in Ratnakar Matkari’s Marathi play Indira.
Bhandarkar's last film, Calendar Girls (2015), sank without a trace at the box office and the director is relying on Indu Sarkar, which is set to be released on 28 July, to reinvent himself.
