Having made her comeback with Gauri Shinde's English Vinglish (2012), where she played the sacrificing mother, there was a fear that Sridevi would pick something similar for her next, which is titled Mom. Thankfully, the trailer of Ravi Udyawar's film proves that the two projects are poles apart. The seasoned actress has chosen an intriguing suspense drama this time.
The film is produced by Sridevi’s husband Boney Kapoor and directed by unheralded filmmaker Udyawar. The makers released the trailer today and you can’t hep but be intrigued by it. At the end of it, one can't decipher the plot. Udyawar deserves credit for keeping the suspense intact.
The key disclosure in the trailer is the daughter (played by Pakistani actress Sajal Ali) asking her mother (Sridevi’s character) to face the truth that she is not her biological daughter.
However, the trailer also shows the girl, the father, and the mother sharing the bond of a happy family. This leads to a question if the daughter is adopted, or has blood ties with the father.
The trailer also sheds light on the fractured relationship that Sridevi's character shares with the girl. The mystery, though, lies in the incidents that follow. Why has Sridevi hired the services of a Dayashankar Kapoor (Nawazuddin Siddiqui)? And what role does Akshaye Khanna's character play?
Siddiqui's DK mentions that he can read a person’s kundali (horoscope) from his/her ashes. Has Sridevi’s daughter gone missing? What really is she looking for? There is an air of mystery attached to the trailer.
Mom might have set the ball rolling with the mysterious plot, but you have to marvel at Siddiqui’s look and character. He is reportedly playing a cameo, but the trailer seems to be holding back something more. While it has a very maternal title, Udyawar's Mom clearly has more to it than meets the eye.
Sridevi has taken a long time to choose her second film in her second innings as an actress. The trailer is enough to suggest that good things come to those who wait. So, fans will have to wait till 7 July for its release. Meanwhile, you can watch the trailer here:
