Baywatch opened to poor reviews and box-office collections in the US and Canada, and it seems the film's performance in India is no different. Priyanka Chopra’s maiden Hollywood flick fared poorly on its opening day and could only manage Rs1.50 crore nett, as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com.

Wonder Woman, the only other Hollywood release yesterday, beat Baywatch with an opening collection of Rs.2.5 crore nett.

Made at an approximate cost of $69 million (about Rs459 crore at the current exchange rate), Baywatch opened on 1,000 screens across India. By contrast, Wonder Woman, made on a budget of a whopping $120 million (about Rs798 crore), was released on just 600 screens.

It must also be noted that while Chopra’s Baywatch has been released in four languages — English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil — Wonder Woman is an only English release.

In January, Deepika Padukone’s xXx: Return Of Xander Cage (2017) had opened to a decent Rs6.25 crore in India.

The poor opening collection will be a blow to the makers of Baywatch and to Chopra.

Meanwhile, the Baahubali: The Conclusion (Hindi) juggernaut appears to be finally grinding to a halt. For the first time since its release five weeks ago, its single day collection dropped below the Rs1 crore mark with the film bagging only Rs75 lakh on Friday, 2 June. The Hindi version has so far bagged Rs501 crore nett.
