Dangal sets new benchmark, becomes first Indian film to earn Rs2,000-crore worldwide

Aamir Khan’s Dangal continues to achieve unprecedented and unheard success. According to a report in Forbes magazine, the Nitesh Tiwari-directed film, on Monday, entered the Rs2,000 crore mark worldwide after it earned Rs2.5 crore in China on the 53rd day of its release in the country.

Needless to say, it is the first Indian film to reach this score. In fact, the film’s competition is now against international blockbusters. Dangal has put behind worldwide blockbusters like Captain America: Civil War, xXx: Return Of Xander Cage, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, The Jungle Book, Titanic 3D, Kung Fu Panda 3, etc. 

The Forbes report said, “Dangal, for its part, showed that Indian films can have the power to resonate deeply with huge audiences outside of India and its diaspora. It is the Indian first film to earn vastly more in a non-Indian territory — the People's Republic of China — than at home. At a PRC gross of $189 million and counting, it has opened up India to the intriguing reality that Indian films needn't be made only for Indians.” 

Chinese filmmaker, Lu Chuan believes that Dangal has taught a lesson to Chinese filmmakers. “Dangal has inspired Chinese filmmakers. Its actors are now megastars in our country though there wasn’t a lot of promotion for it in China. I think Indian films really taught us a lesson this time. Chinese audiences are easily moved by such simple, straightforward and beautiful stories,” he said speaking at the BRICS Film Festival. 

Dangal also recently became the fifth highest grossing non-English film ever in China.
