Box office: Opening day not so bright for Salman Khan's Tubelight

Kabir Khan’s Tubelight has opened to a good number. But more was expected from a keenly awaited release starring Salman Khan around the Eid festival. The film collected Rs20.75 crore (corrected figures) on its opening day. The number is low considering that the film was released simultaneously on 4,400 screens all over India. 

The number is similar to the collection of Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees, which was released at the start of the year. But that film had clashed with another big film, Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil, and got only around 2,500 screens across India.

The first-day collections of Tubelight are lower than the corresponding figures for Salman Khan’s last three films, Sultan (2016), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), which earned Rs36.59 crore, Rs39.32 crore, and Rs26.67 crore, respectively.

Tubelight needs a good jump in collections on Saturday and Sunday. But the film hasn’t received positive reviews and the word-of-mouth is not very good. So, this may prove difficult. 

However, as Eid falls on Monday, 26 June, the collections are expected to rise with Muslims who do not watch films during Ramadan expected to throng the theatres.
