Mouni Roy is set to make her big screen debut opposite Akshay Kumar in Reema Kagti's Gold. The actress, who is currently on a vacation in the United States, will star in the film set to release on the Independence Day weekend next year.
The tabloid, Mumbai Mirror, quoted a source as saying, "Mouni will be seen in a completely different avatar to suit the era. She will film for 20-25 days in August and is one of the few female characters in the otherwise male dominated narrative. She will be shooting extensively with Akshay."
Kagti's film is set in the 1940s era, leading up to the important victory at the 1948 London Olympics. It is likely that the actress will don a more sedate look as compared to her glamorous avatar on television.
In the report by Mumbai Mirror, the source was quoted as saying that the film 'is scripted by Rajesh Devraj and is a fictional take on a momentous game. Hockey will feature prominently in the plot, but it is a strong human drama. Gold follows 12 crucial years in India's history as well."
Reema Kagti's film is based on the first hockey team from independent India to win the gold medal at the Olympics. Akshay Kumar has already been cast in one of the pivotal roles for the film.
Kumar is currently shooting for R Balki's Padman, opposite Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte. The actor also has Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, with Bhumi Pednekar, ready for release on 11 August.
