Dangal makes history; becomes 5th highest grossing non-English movie in the world

Dangal, starring Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, continues to steamroll through box office records across the world; this time the film has made film history as it becomes the fifth highest non-English film. The sports drama follows the triumph and struggles of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler who trains his daughters to international triumph in the competitive field of wrestling.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal joins an exclusive club of films that have earned $300 million or more worldwide. China’s The Mermaid holds the top spot with $553 million (around Rs3,318 crore), while Dangal enters the list at $301 million (around Rs1,806 crore).

Here is the full list of non-English films according to business magazine Forbes’s online report:

1. The Mermaid (2016) – China: $553 million
2. The Intouchables (2011) – France: $427 million
3. Monster Hunt (2015) – China: $386 million
4. Your Name (2016) - Japan: $354 million
5. Dangal (2016) - India: $301 million

This number is likely to change as Dangal is running in theatres across China and Taiwan. It can take over the animation blockbuster from Japan, Your Name, if it continues this way. Forbes also reports $179.8 million (around Rs1,080 crore) of the film’s revenue came in from China while $84.4 million (around Rs504 crore) came from India.

Additionally, Dangal is the first and only Indian film with an overseas gross collection of more than $100 million. That’s a whole lot of firsts for an Indian film!
