It’s no secret that Tubelight is one of the year’s most awaited releases. More so because it will bring together two superstars of Hindi cinema – Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan – in one frame again; albeit for a brief spell.
Kabir Khan’s upcoming film, starring Salman Khan, is a remake of the Hollywood war drama, Little Boy (2015), directed Alejandro Gomez Monteverde. Salman Khan will plays childish Laxman, nicknamed ‘Tubelight’, whose brother Bharat (Sohail Khan) goes off to fight in the Indo-China war.
Shah Rukh Khan is making a ‘very special’ cameo in the film, but details of the role have been kept under wraps. The actor is likely to help Salman’s character Laxman help bring back his brother from the frontlines of the war. Another character in the film, played by the late Om Puri, tells Laxman that if anyone has enough belief, then he can move mountains.
Kabir Khan talked about Shah Rukh’s cameo with the website Bollywood Hungama and said, “When I was writing this character, I just felt it was screaming for a superstar, because there is certain positioning of the character viz-a-viz Salman Khan. And If you need that position viz –a-viz Salman Khan, how many people can do that? So we went to Shah Rukh, of course he is very close to Salman.”
Kabir also revealed that his connection with Shah Rukh Khan goes way back to their college days at Jamia Millia Islamia university in Delhi. “He is also somebody I have known since college days. He had given me his college notes to study (Jamia). I cleared my masters in film-making with his notes. We were in same school. He was senior to me by 2 years,” he said.
Additionally, Kabir said that he and Shah Rukh’s wife, Gauri Khan, “had been dancing partners in a production called Westside Stories. So we go back a long way.”
The director promised that the scene would cause mayhem when the two stars came together on the scene as he confirmed that Shah Rukh’s cameo will “set off the process of Salman’s character, of what he will do in the film.”
Tubelight is due to be released on 23 June, on the holiday weekend of Eid.
