All these films are in debt to Subhash Ghai's Karz

On the 37th anniversary of the reincarnation saga, here are the films, inspired by the lyrics of Anand Bakshi all looked towards the songs of Karz when choosing a title.

Sonal Pandya

1. Paisa Yeh Paisa (1985)

After the success of Hero (1983), Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri were paired up together in many films. This little known film, Paisa Yeh Paisa (1985), was directed by Sohanlal Kumar. Nutan played Laxmi, a widow who suddenly comes into an inheritance and becomes the favourite of all her relatives. The film's title was lifted from the energetic song 'Paisa Yeh Paisa', complete with a large rupee coin in the background, performed by Rishi Kapoor as part of his tour.

2. Main Solah Baras Ki (1998)

Part of the handful of films in the 1990s produced and directed by the unyielding Dev Anand, Main Solah Baras Ki brought in several newcomers, Sabrina, Jas Arora and Neeru Bajwa. Dev Anand played himself as a director on the hunt for new talent. The film was shot in Edinburgh, Scotland and several locations in England and lifted its name from the romantic number 'Main Solah Baras Ki' sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar and picturised on Rishi Kapoor and Tina Munim.

3. Ek Hasina Thi (2004)

The dramatic unmasking of a killer in Karz's 'Ek Hasina Thi', composed by the masters Laxmikant-Pyarelal, became the title of Sriram Raghavan's directorial debut, Ek Hasina Thi. With Urmila Matondkar as Sarika, a woman falsely imprisoned in an underworld case, and Saif Ali Khan as Karan, a sophisticated businessman who operates under false pretenses, the film marked the arrival of Raghavan as a master of the noir thriller genre.

4. Aashiq Banaya Apne (2005)

This Emraan Hashmi-Sonu Sood-starrer got its film title from the lyrics of the song 'Dard-e-Dil'. Aashiq Banaya Apne: Love Takes Over (2005) introduced Tanushree Dutta, winner of Miss India Universe in 2004. However, the film is more notable for launching music composer Himesh Reshammiya as a singer with two hits songs from the soundtrack. Funnily enough, Reshammiya went on to star in the 2008 remake, Karzzzz, directed by Satish Kaushik and co-starring Urmila Matondkar who stepped into Simi Garewal's role.

5. Om Shanti Om (2007)

Like Karz, Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om relied heavily on the themes of reincarnation and revenge. Shah Rukh and Deepika Padukone, in her first film, had double roles as film artistes, Om and Shanti, in the 1970s and 2000s. Khan's film also worked an ode to Hindi cinema of the past with several actor cameos and references. It borrowed the title from Karz's hit song 'Om Shanti Om' in which Rishi Kapoor's singing superstar Monty grooved atop a giant record player.
