So much of the conversation about Madhur Bhandarkar's upcoming Indu Sarkar has revolved around the portrayal of Indira and Sanjay Gandhi that the real heroine of the film has been relegated. The new song, 'Yeh Awaz Hai', from Indu Sarkar seeks to correct this.
Sung by Monali Thakur, and composed by Anu Malik, the song is a gentle, but affirming melody about a woman finding and revelling in her own identity. Featuring Kirti Kulhari's character, Indu's journey from being a naive young girl arriving in Delhi to finding her own voice and identity. As she goes from being a shy, afraid girl to one encouraged by her husband to take centre stage, and later, taking on the establishment on her own, the song continues to weave its own mellow tune.
Thakur's voice is pleasant and establishes the theme of empowerment and identity quite effectively through the song. Malik's composition is hypnotic, and brings back memories of 1970s music to add to the ethos of the film.
Puneet Sharma's lyrics are also a plus point to the entire composition.
Indu Sarkar is directed by Madhur Bhandarkar and jointly produced by Bhandarkar Entertainment and Bharat Shah. The film is set to release in theatres on 28 July.
