We often complain that mainstream Hindi cinema doesn’t make futuristic science-fiction films, like the Hollywood does. It seems, that demand is soon to be fulfilled, although not in a feature film. Directors Maitrey Bajpai and Ramiz Ilham Khan’s short film Carbon is a futuristic sci-fi saga that looks interesting, at least from the trailer, which released yesterday (28 July).
The film has an interesting cast of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Jackky Bhagnani, Prachi Desai and Yashpal Sharma. You are taken in by surprise to see Nawaz play an astronaut. Although he has proved himself as someone who can be moulded in any role, very few would have placed him in the boots of an astronaut. From whatever we see in the trailer, he appears convincing. Jackky Bhagnani, who plays a man with an artificial heart, also looks promising.
The story is based in the year 2067 when pollution has reached unprecedented levels. Oxygen has reduced so massively that it has become like any other product on the shelf. In fact, oxygen has become a trillion dollar industry. So, obviously, there are some bad guys who smuggle oxygen too. The main motto here is to wake-up people from today’s era against environmental degradation.
The subject is fitting for a feature film. It would be interesting to see how they develop the story and take it forward in a short film format.
The release date of Carbon has not been revealed yet.
