Varun, Ranbir or Ranveer would be better for Andaz Apna Apna 2.0, says Rajkumar Santoshi

Those from the 1990s generation have a reason to rejoice, or fear. Director Rajkumar Santoshi has confirmed that he will be working on a sequel to the 1994 cult comedy, Andaz Apna Apna. However, Santoshi clarified that the film will not see a Aamir Khan-Salman Khan reunion as they lack the 'innocence' required to play the characters.

According to Santoshi, the sequel is likely to have an entirely new cast. He told DNA newspaper, "For humour, you need innocence. That time, these actors had the innocence. Now, it will look forced. It looks cute if a 20-year-old is chasing a girl. A 45-50 year old man chasing young girls looks vulgar."

As for the actors who could reinvent the characters, Santoshi pointed out to the new brigade. He said, "There is Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan... They are all promising actors and they have the knack for comedy. I will pick up good talent for the film."

The 1994 comic caper was considered to be a flop on its release, but has since become a decade marker for a large number of fans. From its iconic dialogues to unique characters, the film has acquired a rabid fan following on the internet. The characters of Amar-Prem, played by Aamir and Salman, respectively, went on to become one of the most memorable performances in the actors' careers. The film also had a slew of top list actors like Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Shakti Kapoor giving superlative performances.

Earlier in January this year, Anurag Kashyap-Vikramaditya Motwane's Phantom Films had reportedly approached Vinay Pictures for the rights of the original film, which they were denied. Priti Sinha, director of Vinay Pictures said, in a quote to The Times Of India, "It is to be noted that the rights of the film remain with Vinay Pictures and have not been sold to Phantom Films."

It is unknown whether Santoshi has acquired the rights to the film, or is making a completely new sequel to the original venture.

In a quote to DNA, Santoshi expressed his will to make a worthy succesor to the original film: "I want to make a worthy successor. What other filmmakers do is en-cash on a successful film’s title, whether there is a story or not. I can’t cheat people with the title. The day I’m satisfied with the subject being the worthy successor, I will get on the floor with the movie."
