The Hungry, Omerta, Mukkabaaz to represent India at Toronto International Film Festival 2017

Director Hansal Mehta's Omerta, Anurag Kashyap's Mukkabaaz and Bornila Chatterjee's Shakespearean The Hungry are the three major Indian films to premiere at the 41st Toronto International Film Festival.

The festival, which will begin on 7 September, lasts for a duration of 10 days. The concluding event will take place on 17 September.

While Mehta's Omerta features the director's favourite Rajkummar Rao playing the infamous British born terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Shaikh, Kashyap's Mukkabaaz (The Brawler in English) is based on a lower caste boxer struggling to make an impact in the world of boxing.

Chatterjee's The Hungry features Naseeruddin Shah, Sayani Gupta and Tisca Chopra in an adaptation of the lesser known Shakespearean revenge drama, Titus Andronicus.

The three films will be screened under Special Presentations, a section which opens with Greta Gerwig's directorial debut Lady Bird. The closing film of the section will be the quirky comedy by Amr Salama, Sheikh Jackson.

Apart from the three, Priyanka Chopra's Purple Pebble Pictures were also speculated to release their Sikkimese film, Pahuna, at the festival. However, reports suggest that director Paakhi Tyrewala missed the deadline.

Ali Fazal will be another familiar Indian face at the festival with his film Victoria & Abdul also finding a place at the festival.

Among the favourites at the festival are Guillermo Del Toro's The Shape of Water, Alexander Payne's Downsizing and George Clooney's Suburbico.
