Anil Kapoor: Writing is very important, especially in comedy

With over a hundred film credits to his name, actor Anil Kapoor has showed off his range in everything from drama to action to comedy. His latest film, Mubarakan (2017), has him exploring the comedy zone yet again, something he successfully navigated in the Welcome films and No Entry (2005). The common factor between those films and this film — writer-director Anees Bazmee.

Speaking at a promotional event for the film, Anil said that he instinctively felt he should act in Mubarakan. Intent is important for him as he takes up any new project. “Writing is very important, especially in comedy. [If] you have a director like Manmohan Desai, Anees Bazmee or Hrishikesh Mukherjee, these kind of directors when they get good content, and who have great sense of writing themselves, it really becomes a special thing. You need a master storyteller behind the camera and Anees Bazmee is that director,” he explained.

According to Anil, Bazmee is the one of few writer-directors who has a sense of humour and understands the pulse of the audience. He was happy that he had worked often with Bazmee.

Anil also praised his co-star and nephew, Arjun Kapoor, who he feels has the talent and right projects to get ahead in his career. “I think this is just the tip of the iceberg what he’s going to achieve in the future,” he claimed.

The Mr. India actor has carved his own unique niche in Hindi cinema, trying something new every couple of years. In 2008, he was a part of the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle and that has opened doors for international projects for the 61-year-old veteran.

Once Mubarakan releases in theatres, Anil is flying out of the country to nurse his injured leg and will start work on the third season of the acclaimed series 24, on which he is also a producer. He is also prepping for Fanney Khan with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan which is due to be released next year. He has also done a pilot episode for Amazon Prime Video’s Oasis, directed by Kevin Macdonald, that is yet to be picked up for a series order.
