The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has served a notice to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan to appear before it personally on 23 August, for a hearing regarding violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) rules, official sources said.
The case dates back to 2008, when the promoters of IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders sold their shares to a Mauritius-based company at lower prices, which, according to the ED, has caused a loss of Rs73 crore in foreign exchange.
The two are required to remain present in person before the Adjudicating Authority for the final hearing, with their legal and financial advisors, where Khan's explanation will be heard and a penalty will be decided on. Shah Rukh had appeared twice before the ED in 2011 and 2015 to record his statement in the case.
After its investigations into the case, in March 2017 the ED issued notices to Shah Rukh, Gauri and their associate and former actress Juhi Chawla on charges of violating FEMA norms.
This news comes soon after Gujarat high court stayed proceedings against the actor in connection with the death of a 45-year-old man during Raees promotions.
