Bareilly Ki Barfi trailer: A love triangle with a taste of Bareilly’s love and humour

Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Sanon are caught in a sweet love triangle.

The makers of Bareilly Ki Barfi released a thoroughly entertaining trailer of the film set in the Uttar Pradesh city. The film is penned by Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari and directed by his wife Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. The trailer was launched with a "mooh mitha kijiye" (have something sweet) disclaimer and as it turns out it is indeed a sweet offering.

While promoting his last release Meri Pyaari Bindu (2017), Ayushmann Khurrana had promised that Kriti Sanon will be seen in a never-seen-before avatar in Bareilly Ki Barfi. Sanon plays a girl-next-door, while Khurrana, is also seen in a different avatar of an intimidating Uttar Pradesh boy, and jilted lover.

Bitti (Sanon) is not your traditional Bareilly girl. Bitti finds a perfect description of herself in a book titled 'Bareilly Ki Barfi' — one who smokes, drinks, breakdances and watches English films. Bitti's mother wants her to get married but the blunt Bitti drives away all suitors.

Enter Chirag Dubey (Khurrana), who loves Bitti but the girl is more interested in Pritam Vidrohi, probably the writer of the book. Chirag finds Pritam and requests him to meet Bitti once, break her heart, so he can jump right in and ask her to marry him (Chirag). Pritam, though, discovers the daring UP-ite in him and warns Chirag to stay out of Bitti and his life.

Tumhe toh depress karne bheja tha, tum toh impress kar aaye,” (You were supposed to leave her depressed buy you’ve impressed her) Chirag is seen fuming, making it a funny scene.

Agar shakal dekhkar ladkiyan shaadi karti toh Hindustan ke aadhe mard kunware hote” (If a woman paid heed to just looks, then half of Indian men would remain bachelors),” Pritam shoots back, setting the pace for a rollicking romantic, entertaining tug of war for Bitti.

The screenplay for the film based on the book, reportedly by German author Daniela Thiele under the pseudonym Nicholas Barreau, has been written by Nitesh himself. Mr and Mrs Tiwari have set the film in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The film promises to give the audience a taste of Bareilly’s love and humour. It'll be interesting to see who Bitti chooses.

The film is scheduled to be released in theatres on 18 August. Watch the entertaining trailer.
