Assamese singer and actress Bidisha Bezbaruah, 30, allegedly committed suicide under mysterious circumstances at her residence in Gurgaon on Monday. The actress was last seen in a minor appearance in Anurag Basu's Jagga Jasoos. Bezbaruah was also a television personality who had hosted several stage shows as well.
In a statement, deputy comissioner of police (east) Deepak Saharan said, "Bezbaruah was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her rented accomodation which she had taken recently."
While the reasons for her suicide have not yet been ascertained, several news reports quoted sources suggesting her husband's extramarital affair as a reason that pushed the actress over the edge. No suicide note of any kind was recovered in the actress' possession.
Meanwhile, the daily, The Hindu, reported that the actress' husband, Nisheet Jha, has been arrested on charges of abetting suicide. Jha has been accused by Bezbaruah's family of having an extramarital affair which caused discord in the family.
The deputy comissioner of police (east) Deepak Saharan had said, "The victim’s father claimed in his complaint that she had a love marriage, but would often have quarrels with her husband."
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbhananda Sonowal has spoken to his Haryana counterpart, Manohar Lal Khattar, demanding a in-depth probe into the matter.
