Nawazuddin Siddiqui's latest tweet hints that Hindi cinema is not over its 'fair' obsession

Nawazuddin Siddiqui's talent has never been in question. Since his breakthrough in Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), the actor has been hailed for his consistent performances. However, the actor's latest tweet is an indication that the industry still holds his 'looks' against him.

On Monday night, the actor tweeted 'Thank U 4 making me realise dat I cannot b paired along wid d fair & handsome bcz I m dark & not good looking, but I never focus on that.'

While the actor failed to mention the reference to his comments, the implication lies directly to his upcoming film alongside Tiger Shroff, Munna Michael. The film will see Siddiqui take on the unconventional challenge (for him) of dancing for the first time on screen. The trailer also indicates that Siddiqui might be vying for the attention of Nidhhi Agerwal's character in the film, competing with Shroff. It is quite possible that this has not gone down well with some industry insiders.

The tweet found some sympathy from his fans, including director Hansal Mehta who tweeted 'That's why you are special Nawaz.'

The issue of fairness has been debated in recent years with Abhay Deol launching an attack on actors endorsing fairness products.

Incidentally, it was Siddiqui who had spoken up against accusations of 'racism' in the film industry last year. During the promotions of Freaky Ali (2016), Siddiqui had said, "I think there is no racism in this film industry. They are only in need of talent though it takes time but, if you are talented you will get your due. I am thankful to be part of this industry."

In several previous interviews, Siddiqui has mentioned the discrimination he faced due to his 'looks' during his struggling years. The fact that the actor continues to face such issues after having proven his talent is a sad statement in and of itself.
