Saif Ali Khan is excited about his web series Sacred Games

The series is based on author Vikram Chandra's book of the same name.

Saif Ali Khan has stepped into new territory by signing up for a web series titled Sacred Games.

Sacred Games is Netflix’s first original production in India. The drama is being co-produced with Phantom Films. The series is based on Indo-American writer Vikram Chandra’s book of the same name and set against the backdrop of organized crime, corruption, politics and espionage in Mumbai. The story is said to encompass the lives of the elite, the famous and the bloodthirsty.

Khan will be playing Sartaj Singh. The actor spoke to the Mid-Day newspaper, sharing his thoughts on the upcoming web series.

“I think web content is really powerful and that's where we all need to be," he said. "Television has a lot of restrictions. Web content, on the other hand, is devoid of any kind of censorship. It's a free environment."

Asked what attracted him to the web series, he said, “I am excited about the quality and content of our show. The book was fantastic and I hope we can do justice to it. We have an amazing team. I am looking forward to start this new venture."

Khan is the latest Hindi film star to take up a web series. Vivek Oberoi has done Amazon Prime’s Inside Edge, a drama centring on match-fixing in cricket.

Khan will be seen next on the big screen in Akshat Verma’s directorial debut Kaalakandi.
