Vishal Dadlani is an ace composer but he's made a mark as a playback singer too, with hits such as 'Jee Le Zara' from Talaash (2012) and 'Dhan Te Nan' from Kaminey (2009). The singer, however, was never heard setting Punjabi words in tune. The wait now is over with the 'Jatt Jaguar' track from Mubarakan, released today (15 July).
The song is in the Punjabi language, with little of Hindi. Therefore, perhaps a non-Punjabi speaking audience may be left clueless of the lyrics. The song hinges on a few English words too that might just help the listeners relate to the song. The use of the word 'jaguar' holds much significance. It is well known that the Jatt community have a flair for the good things in life. The privileged lot like their fancy cars and are not afraid of showing off their swagger. The song is all about 'swag' and ability to carry it off. Lyricist Kumaar has penned words that define the 'swag' of Karanveer and Charanveer - Arjun Kapoor’s two avatars in Mubarakan.
Since he doesn’t sing film songs regularly, it would take some time for the listeners to recognize Vishal Dadlani's voice. Even though he is not a Punjabi, the singer does complete justice to the song with a perfectly adapted accent. His voice has the perfect swag and oozes with confidence throughout the track. Also, his voice suits Arjun Kapoor perfectly, who plays a Sikh in the film.
Dadlani shares the mic with Navraj Hans, a popular Punjabi singer-actor and son of singer Hans Raj Hans. Given his 'Punjabiness', Hans' voice reflects the culture and suits the song, however, this is not to say that he overshadows Dadlani. Apeksha Dandekar has sung a few lines in the song and she doesn't disappoint. Apart from the fine singing, what works well for 'Jatt Jaguar' are the peppy Punjabi pop and bhangra beats. There’s no dull note or loud tone that would burst into your ears. Unusually, Dadlani is not the one to compose this track, but it’s Amaal Mallik.
Arjun Kapoor has truly got rid of his inhibitions and unleashed the dancer in him. Though not as vibrant and innovative as the 'Hawa Hawa' track, Kapoor doesn’t disappoint in displaying his swagger.
Mubarakan is set to be released on 28 July.
