Indu Sarkar's 'Dilli Ki Raat': Song does no justice to the legend of Bappi Lahiri

The team of Indu Sarkar released a new song from the film, 'Dilli Ki Raat'. Sung by Bappi Lahiri and composed by Anu Malik, the song brings back two music veterans from a bygone era. However, the combination does not seem to have worked too well. While the music is catchy with the right beats, the singer fails to rekindle the 'disco' magic that he aced a few decades ago. The song makes one wonder if the veteran singer-composer has overstayed his welcome. The 'Dilli Ki Raat' song from Indu Sarkar does Lahiri’s legend no justice.

The opening lines of the lyrics themselves are a letdown:

‘Salaam karo dost, ke baap aaye hain, 
kamaal hai kamaal hai ke aap aaye hain’.

The song, written by Puneet Sharma, is effectively trying to describe Neil Nitish Mukesh’s character, who is seen to be calling the shots during the Emergency era. The lyrics are redeemed in the antara, but not really saving the track. 

Anmoll Malik sings the mukhda or the intro of the song and can be heard crooning the most painful lines:

'Hello, hello you're welcome, you’re awesome. 
Hello zara aankhen toh milaiye,
Dilli ki raat hai na jayiye'

You will need tremendous amounts of patience if you intend to stay put for the entire song. The fact that this is not a short track, also adds to its woes.

Anmoll Malik is forced to sing in a titillating manner, for the song also features a cabaret girl, but her overtly seductive tone simply fails to please the ears. Also, the glam doll featured in the song is all over the place with her lip syncing. 

The one thing that is noteworthy about the track is its peppy music. It takes you back to the retro era. Anu Malik’s music saves the track from being a complete disaster.

'Dilli Ki Raat' leaves you pondering on the revival of bygone eras. Are they really worth the buck if they leave just a pale shadow of themselves behind?
