The much-awaited trailer of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Babumoshai Bandookbaaz has finally been released. And it’s one that will make you bleed in glee. Lovers of action drama, rustic crime thrillers will be smacking their lips at the prospect of Siddiqui playing an entertaining gun slinger Babumoshai Bandookbaaz. Siddiqui had earlier said that he was inspired by Al Pacino and James Bond for the role.
The three-minute trailer is one filled with guns, daredevilry and dark comedy. Babu has the swag of a desi Pacino and loverboy Bond. In the desi parlance, one would call that a r*******z (womaniser).
He's the best slinger in town, but Babu meets his nemesis in his own prodigy — Babu Ka Chela (sidekick). Now the prodigy is too eager to topple the king. So the duo play a game. One who kills two out of the three targets gets to be the king, while the loser gets banished forever.
The battle ends in a draw, but there’s a sinister plot Babumoshai didn't see coming. Is it Babu Ka Chela who tells Babu that he's the fourth target? The tables have turned and the hunter is now the hunted.
Siddiqui has been seen on screen wielding guns, but Babu's crudeness adds interesting layers to his character. The dark unabashed humour only adds to the excitement. The scenes of Babu and Babu Ka Chela deciding to toss it out before killing the target reminds one of Hollywood westerns.
Director Kushan Nandy has cleverly used the classic Doordarshan (national broadcaster) tune for dramatic effect. Will the CBFC object to this usage? Only time will tell.
Director Nandy seems to have a riveting plot up his sleeve. There are guns, girls (Bidita Bag, Shraddha Das, Divya Dutta), and games galore in the trailer that hits you like a bullet.
Dutta dug in the ground with only her head visible, makes for a telling shot. One can be rest assured that Siddiqui will be firing on all cylinders as Babumoshai Bandookbaaz.
The film will be released on 25 August.
