One expects high quality cinema if Vishal Bhardwaj is at the helm of affairs. The first trailer of his keenly awaited film, Rangoon, is out. After going through the first viewing, it seems that it won’t be wrong to have high hopes of dedicated storytelling from him this time.
Rangoon is based in the year 1944. On the one hand, the second World War is in full swing and on the other, India is struggling to get rid of the British rule from their land. Saif Ali Khan is a filmmaker recruited by the Britishers to send his star performer, Julia, played by Kangana Ranaut to Burma against her wishes to raise the morale of the soldiers. The task of protecting and controlling her is given to an soldier played by Shahid Kapoor.
The trailer makes it look that the film falls in the thrilling drama genre. This is the first time that a Bhardwaj movie will have such high-octane action and stunts. Some of the sequences do look impressive, except for the VFX images of fighter planes at the start. It seems a lot has been spent on the production design, which is a must in a period drama. The recreation of Mumbai’s famous Eros theatre is interesting.
Bhardwaj is also known for his dark, witty and quirky humour. No prizes for guessing that Rangoon too falls in the same league. The dialogue about Hitler deserves special mention. The same can be expected from the music too. The song ‘Bloody Hell’ plays in the background and it seems quite enjoyable.
Produced by Nadiadwala Grandson and Viacom 18, Rangoon is due to be released on 24 February.
