The attack by the Rajput Karni Sena on Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the sets of Padmavati in Jaipur on Friday came as a shock to the film industry. The National award winning director was manhandled, slapped and had his film equipment vandalised by the so-called protestors who objected to 'alleged' love scenes between Padmavati and Allaudin Khilji in the film.
The attack saw the entire industry rise in support of the director. From Mahesh Bhatt to long time rival, Anurag Kashyap, the industry was unanimous in the opinion that such an attack should be condemned and prevented.
While the attacked roused the industry which joined up in support of Bhansali, the silence of the film's lead actors was beginning to raise alarms. Finally, Deepika Padukone tweeted today about the incident, expressing her 'sadness'.
She wrote 'In a state of shock!deeply saddened and disheartened by yesterday's events!#Padmavati'.

Our only endeavour is & has always been to share with the world the story of this courageous & powerful woman in the purest form there is.ðÂÂÂ

Padmavati is a period drama based on the legend of Rani Padmini of Chittor. Padukone plays Rani Padmavati in Bhansali's film, with Shahid Kapoor playing Raja Rawal Ratan Singh, and Ranveer Singh playing Alauddin Khilji.
Padukone was not the only one to emerge in support of her director. Shahid Kapoor tweeted:
Very very sad. Words do fall short and feel too little to express feelings. Violence is unacceptable. This incident has shocked me.

We need to look deep within as a society, as a country, as a people. Where are we headed.

Kapoor was embroiled in quite a controversy himself when his film Udta Punjab (2016) ran into certification problems with the CBFC last year. The issue brought the industry together.
Even Alauddin Khilji, Singh, has not tweeted support of his director. The actor wrote this on his social media platform.
As a team, we are making 'Padmavati' keeping in mind the sensitivities and emotions of the people of Rajasthan and the Rajput community.

Sanjay Sir is one of the most accomplished & authentic filmmakers we have in India, & he wont ever do anything to hurt anyones feelings.

Whats happened is very unfortunate. We hope the people of Rajasthan will understand & empathise with our intentions & give us their support.

While the events might have hurt him, Bhansali can rest assured that his cast and crew are firm in their support of his work. For now, the film's schedule in Jaipur has been cancelled. However, there is no report on whether the production company or Bhansali himself will resort to legal action on the incident.
