Box-office: Raees hits Rs20 crore, Kaabil lags behind with Rs7.75 crore on first day

The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer emerged as the big winner on D-day for the two big releases. Raees earned an approximate Rs20.25-20.50 crore, while Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil struggled past the Rs7.75-8 crore mark.

Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil had its task cut out at the box-office competing with Shah Rukh Khan’s much-awaited Raees on its opening day. Despite the positive reception for both films, it seems that the clash has affected Kaabil’s opening collections. It has managed to earn only Rs7.75-8crore on the first day, as per figures shared by BoxOfficeIndia.com.

Raees review: Typical underworld entertainer with high dose of Shah Rukh Khan

On the other hand, Raees turned out to be the clear winner by amassing Rs20.25-20.50 crore. Considering it wasn’t a holiday yesterday, the number is surely impressive. The Rahul Dholakia-directed film is reportedly made at an approximate budget of Rs85 crore. So, the film has a good chance of surpassing that number in the coming days. With the Republic Day holiday and a weekend looming around the corner,  Dholakia's film might see a good jump in its collections.

Kaabil has reportedly been made at an approximate budget of Rs55-60 crore. The Rs8 crore collection on day one means that it has a difficult journey ahead. The film needs a jump in collections today (Republic Day holiday) and will need to show consistent returns till Sunday, if it wishes to get into the profit zone.

Kaabil review: Hrithik Roshan's performance is highlight of this revenge drama

Kaabil should keep its hopes alive though. The film has received highly positive reviews and has a strong word-of-mouth praise going for it. Hence, Sanjay Gupta's film does stand a chance.

Having said that, Raees has not only managed to earn much more, but also acquired more screens than Kaabil. Therefore, if Khan's film sees a big jump in collections today, it might prove damaging for Kaabil.

A lot depends on what happens at the ticket window today.
