25 years of Vishwatma: 5 ways 'Saat Samundar Paar' song still lives on

Written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Viju Shah, the song first debuted in 1992 as part of the soundtrack of director Rajiv Rai’s Vishwatma.

Twenty-five years ago, ‘Saat Samundar Paar’, sung by Sadhana Sargam, created a storm when it was seen in Vishwatma (1992). The film starred Sunny Deol, Naseeruddin Shah, Chunky Pandey, Sonam and newcomer Divya Bharti. The modern-sounding song struck a chord and it has remained a favourite since then. In the years that have passed, it has been played everywhere from public and private celebrations across the country and around the world. Here are some of the instances it has remained in the people’s minds.

1. Saat Samundar Paar (Remix)

Around 11 years ago, the song was remixed by DJ Remy as part of the album, Dance All Night Vol 21 Greatest Dance Hits, released by the music label Saregama. Sung by Pallavi Kelkar, the song mostly stuck to its original melody, which led people to turn to the first version.

2. Salman Khan dances to ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ in Kick (2014)

In Sajid Nadiadwala’s directorial debut, Salman Khan played Devi Lal Singh, an adventurous adrenaline-seeking man named Devi Lal Singh. Randeep Hooda played a cop, Himanshu Tyagi who is pursuing a Robin Hood-esque thief named Devil. In the scene, Salman as Devi, gleefully dances to the song, even re-enacting the same steps by choreographer Saroj Khan, before he locks horns with Hooda as Tyagi and other foes.

3. Badshah, Aastha Gill perform ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ remix

Rapper Badshah and singer Aastha Gill, who made the song ‘DJ Waley Babu’ famous, sang their own version of the song, with Badshah adding his own rap lyrics in between while Gill sings the more traditional version. The audiences seems to love it, singing out the lyrics to the song at this performance.  

4. Cadbury Dairy Milk advertisement featuring ‘Saat Samundar Paar’

A year after ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ resurfaced in Kick (2014), it was seen again in the cute Cadbury advertisement which brought a smile to our faces with its portrayal of an aunt and niece bonding over chocolate, and yes, their mutual love of the song. The ad was directed by Vinil Mathew who made his Hindi directorial debut in 2014 with Hasee Toh Phasee starring Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra.

5. ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ Bollywood Dance Workout

After remixes and ads, can a dance workout be far behind? The folks behind Fusion Elements Dance Academy turned the song’s choreography into a high-energy two-minute workout. Time to discard the high heels and slip into those comfy trainers for this one.
