As the festival season begins, indie gems from across the country are coming back into the news again. One such film is the Rajkummar Rao-starrer, Newton. Directed by Amit Masurkar, Newton has been selected among the Indian entries shortlisted for the Berlin International Film Festival.
Rao announced the news on his Twitter page.
A black comedy with a political subtext, Newton has the National Award winner play a government clerk placed on election duty in a Naxal-infested forest region. The film is built around the bumbling struggles of an honest man trying to do his duty in the most trying circumstances.
Masurkar, who previously directed the brilliant Suleimani Keeda, will see Newton featured in the Forum segment of the festival. The segment often premieres films with edgy, radical, and innovative content and technique.
The film is being produced by Manish Mundra and Drishyam films, that have been behind some pathbreaking films like Masaan (2015), Umrika (2015), Aankhon Dekhi (2013) and Waiting (2016).
The Berlin International Film Festival is set to open on 9 February and continue till 19 February.
