What would a Hindi film be without music? Musicals are the essence of Hindi cinema. The 1990s saw some films like Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994) and Saajan (1991), which had dozens of songs. Well, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina-starrer Jagga Jasoos threatens to set a record of sorts in the modern era with the  Anurag Basu-directed fantasy-detective drama set to have 29 songs.

No, that is not a joke but a fact revealed by music director Pritam Chakraborty.

“There are 29 songs in all,” Pritam told the daily, DNA.

While it’s imperative for musical to have plenty of songs, but 29? When asked about it, the music director said, “You see, Ranbir Kapoor stutters throughout the film, the only time he doesn’t, is when he sings. And every time he expresses an emotion strongly, it’s through songs. Think of the effortlessness in the way the songs are featured in La La Land. They are a part of the story. And the narrative flows forward through it.”

While 29 is a staggering number, the record for the most number of songs in a film belongs to the https://www.cinestaan.com/articles/2017/feb/1/4096/85th-anniversary-indra-sabha-a-film-with-nearly-70-songs1932 film Indra Sabha, adapted from the Urdu play Inder Sabha written by poet Agha Hasan Amanat. The movie was made by Jamshedji Framji Madan's company, Madan Theatre. Indrasabha holds the world record for the most number of songs (72) in any musical ever made.

Jagga Jasoos is set to be released on 7 April, 2017.  The film’s trailer, that was launched in December last year, had received positive response for its vibrant colors and music, drawing comparisons with Basu’s own Barfi! (2012), and Hollywood flicks Tintin and the Ace Ventura series.
