While Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt have already shown a glimpse of their wacky chemistry in a series of advertisements, fans have been waiting for the two to sign a film together. Recent reports suggest that it might soon happen. The two have now been cast together in Zoya Akhtar's next film on street rappers in Mumbai.

Tentatively titled, Gully Boy, the film was announced a year ago. Singh was first choice for Akhtar, having won critical praise for his performance in Dil Dhadakne Do (2015). However, the addition of Alia Bhatt to the cast makes for an interesting combination. The film is reportedly inspired from the real-life stories of street rappers from Mumbai, namely the YouTube sensations Divine and Naezy. Singh is most likely playing an underdog street rapper who struggles against his circumstances. Considering the actor's well known skills for freestyle rapping, he is an apt choice for the role.

The film is being produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar's Excel Entertainment, and will also mark the debut of Zoya Akhtar's own production banner, Tiger Baby. Gully Boy is expected to go on floors in November this year.

For now, Singh continues to be busy with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period drama, Padmavati. Bhatt, meanwhile, has Badrinath Ki Dulhania opposite Varun Dhawan and the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer, Dragon, directed by Ayan Mukerji lined up as her next projects.
