When it comes to Hindi films, the word ‘ghost’ instantly strikes fear in the minds of the audience. But in recent years, there have also been films about ghosts that fall in the comic or light-hearted genre. Some of the examples are, Paheli (2006), Hum Tum Aur Ghost (2010), Bhoothnath (2008), Bhoothnath Returns (2014) and Great Grand Masti (2016).
Now, we can add Anushka Sharma’s production, Phillauri, to the list. There was a lot of buzz about its first trailer in last few days. It’s finally out and, after watching it, the film appears to be an interesting ghostly affair.
Sharma plays the ghost, Shashi, who has been residing inside a tree. The story takes place in today’s time when a young man (Suraj Sharma, of Life Of Pi fame) is advised to carry out a ritual of marrying a tree in order to free himself of a superstitious condition called manglik. But as the girl’s ghost is inside the tree, he unintentionally gets married to her. This brings forth a series of hilarious events.
But, as expected, the ghost has a back story. The girl, when she was alive, was deeply in love with a Punjabi folk singer called Phillauri, played by Diljit Dosanjh. But their love story remains incomplete, which leads to the death of Shashi. It is easy to guess that Shashi wants to fulfil her last wish through Suraj’s character. Like a number of trailers of today’s era, this one too reveals a bit too much about the film.
Directed by debutant Anshai Lal, Phillauri is all set to release on 24 March.
