No justification for violence, Swara Bhaskar on Ramjas College clashes

The actress has taken a stand against ABVP's violent tactics.

The violent turn of events at Delhi’s Ramjas College have created an uproar among the public, especially on social media. The clash between right wing student force, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and All India Student Association (AISA), a leftist student organisation refuses to cool down.

Expressing concern over the situation, actress Swara Bhaskar has condemned the violence. Without mentioning the ABVP she criticised them for their violent acts in the name of patriotism.

“As a student of Delhi University and JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) I want to say in no unclear terms that violence can never be justified in any context, even if you give an explanation about it later. You can call it nationalism or you can give it any other emotional title. But the fact is that to raise a hand on someone because of some protests and difference of views is not right,” she said while speaking at the launch of Hawa Badlo, an initiative to create better working conditions for Mumbai’s traffic police.

Bhaskar also mentioned about the recent attacks on Sanjay Leela Bhansali while highlighting the regular incidents of violence currently. “If as a society or group you have an issue with something, it should be sorted out through communication and dialogue. But we have been witnessing this (violence) in our country again and again. We artists are constantly vulnerable to such acts. We recently saw an attack on Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir. Now we are witnessing this violence. The situation is very worrisome.”

The actress has been constantly condemning the use of violence by ABVP on social media. She specifically spoke against ex-Indian cricketer Virendra Sehwag for trolling a student Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of a martyred soldier, for stating that it was war that killed her father and not Pakistan. She has also been speaking against ABVP.
