Sometimes real life can trump reel life in its plot twists. Actor Dhanush seems to be facing something stranger than fiction. The actor appeared at the Madurai high court today to deny the claims of a couple claiming him to be their son. The actor was asked by the high court to be present to verify certain birthmarks as claimed by the couple.

The couple in question, Kathiresan and Meenakshi from Thiruppavam, had alleged that Dhanush was their long lost son. The couple have also applied for maintenance support for Rs65,000 from the court. The Madras high court had previously quashed a similar case filed by the couple, before they approached a lower court at Melur, in the Madurai district. The couple claimed that the actor was born in Madurai, and left for Chennai in 2002 to become an actor. Incidentally, Dhanush made his debut in films in Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002) directed by his father,

According to the latest reports, Dhanush was subjected to checks for birthmark verification, with the dean of Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai heading the inspection. The actor had already submitted affidavits providing evidence of his name, passport, visa copy and birth certificate. His counsel had sought to quash the claim, before the couple filed a counter affidavit suggesting these documents cannot disprove birthmarks. They even accused the actor of producing false documents to assert his claim. Dhanush has stated that he is the son of Kasthuri Raja and K Vijayalakshmi, and is the brother of filmmaker Selvaraghavan.

For now, the court has postponed the decision to 2 March when the results from the medical experts are expected.

Dhanush can take comfort in the fact that this is a problem that baffled even Shah Rukh Khan. In 1996, Khan was dragged to court by a woman claiming he was her long lost son. The case was eventually quashed on the grounds of insufficient evidence by the woman.

Dhanush has just finished up with the shoots for his next, VIP 2 alongside Kajol, and is starting work on his directorial debut, Power Paandi.
