From stalking Sachin Tendulkar to voting for Rajya Sabha elections — Varun Dhawan's eventful day

Twitter spares none, least of all Bollywood celebrities. Varun Dhawan had an eventful day as he became a target of Twitter trolls. He had made a politically incorrect statement and later an Indian Express carried a report with the headline suggesting he was stalking cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. 

The actor rubbished the report saying that he met the Indian cricket legend, but did not want to talk about it. 

Dhawan was at Mumbai’s Mehboob Studios for Badrinath Ki Dulhania promotions. It’s not known why Tendulkar was there, but a vanity van bearing the name of Tendulkar got Dhawan excited. Tendulkar was probably at the studio for some shoot of his own.

Earlier in the day, Dhawan turned up to vote for the Brihammumbai Municipal Corporation elections. The actor was stunned to realise that his name didn’t appear in the voters' list.

Speaking to reporters at the poll booth, Dhawan said, “My name has not shown up in the list unfortunately. It’s bizarre because I voted last year. Will find out from the EC where is my name.”

While speaking to India Today television network, he said that he was surprised that his name wasn’t there (in the voters' list) as he has voted for the Rajya Sabha elections last year.

A Twitter user captured this footage from the television and uploaded it on his Twitter account. 

Rajya Sabha elections in India do not involve the general public and ministers are elected by the Legislative Assembly of States and Union Territories.  

The Lok Sabha elections had taken place in 2014, while the Maharashtra Assembly polls were held in October 2014. The actor defended his comment tweeting that is was a mere slip of the tongue. 

'Hahaha. I don't. It was a slip of the tongue. I meant the Lok Sabha elections for which I voted in 2014,' Dhawan said, before deleting the tweet.

It didn’t take long for netizens to troll Dhawan for his politically incorrect statement with some comparing his political intelligence to that of his Badrinath Ki Dulhania co-star Alia Bhatt. Bhatt has been the subject of jokes ever since she said on television show Koffee With Karan that Prithviraj Chauhan was the president of India. Bhatt had mistaken the then Maharashtra chief minister as India’s President.
