Reprises are all the vogue in the film industry today, and Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar have dug deep to pull out a gem. The latest track from Rangoon, 'Tippa', is a throwback to the earliest partnership between the lyricist and the music director in the animated Alice In Wonderland.
Featuring Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor, along with the troupe of actors and musicians as they travel on a train, 'Tippa' is a peppy, happy number that is definitely catchy. Gulzar's inane lyrics add to the amusement of Ranaut's mood change. Sunidhi Chauhan, Rekha Bhardwaj, Sukhwinder Singh and Bhardwaj himself bring the ditty to life with their voices.
Shot on the top of a moving train, the song is visually beautiful. While Ranaut is perfect as the angry, but a daredevil heroine, Kapoor is his usual glowering self. The catch in the song is the tune, which is a remake of the 'Alice In wonderland' theme that Gulzar and Vishal Bhardwaj worked during the 80s. For the generation that remembers the animated series, this will be a wonderful trip down the rabbit hole.
Here's the original tune for comparison:
Now, that the duo has managed to create a delightful twist to this ditty, there's another one fans would love to see happen: The Jungle Book theme.
Rangoon is directed by Bhardwaj and stars Saif Ali Khan, Ranaut and Kapoor. The film is set to be released in theatres on 24 February.
